Background: "Domestic violence is prevalent and crosses all cultures. Numerous public awareness campaigns are currently active to address this, emphasizing the need to seek outside help before violence escalates. Children are educated to call for emergency assistance if they see abuse in their homes. While these messages seem rather commonplace in Western culture, they contradict the emphasis on extended family and elder support prevalent in East African cultures. Consequently, when immigrant women find themselves in a violent situation and follow what they have learned from the inundating media, they may be ostracized for stepping outside the usual system of elders as family mediators. These are women we are seeing in our healthcare system. As healthcare providers, we screen for domestic violence but doing so may cross significant cultural boundaries. Providers must be educated about working with East African immigrants in addressing domestic violence and East African immigrants would benefit from a culturally specific definition of violence and the response to it within the community."
